Pecan puns...

My Godmummy Kitty bought me a Bread Bed recently!
#onlyihaveagodmummy #pecanandpippindonothave #hehehe #iamspecial
Not only does it fit us nicely (we bought the 60cm one!), the bed is really comfy.
And best of all, Mummy gets to come up with silly names while naming our pics.

Our Pawprint Keepsake-s

Throwback to the days when I was the only child (gosh, I miss them so~), Mummy made me an adorable pawprint keepsake.
And when Pecan came along, Mummy made a mental note to make one for her too.
A pawprint keepsake for Pecan ah ma was seriously long overdue.

So when Mummy came across this Scupley kit at Art Friend (Plaza Singapore) a couple of months ago, she decided to finally get it done.

Toilet Training Pippin

It's hard to believe that it has been more than two months since Pippin monster joined our family.
And no, me and Pecan still ain't super fond of her.

But, I guess we're starting to come to terms with having an 'energizer' bunny (like literally) in our house.

Work-in-Progress

Kudos to Mummy for finally creating our very own Facebook page!
#waituntilnecklonglongliao #pleasegiveusyoursupportwor

Now that it is off our to-do list. The next thing inefficient mummy  we have to get around doing... is.. giving our blog a fresh look!
Unfortunately, Mummy is no where close to being an expert in this field.

Twelve Nights...

is how long a dog in a Taiwanese shelter has to find a home before he gets put down.
It's also the title of a documentary directed by Raye and produced by Giddens Ko (九把刀) and Sophia Sui (隋棠).
Twelve Nights (十二夜) follows the fates of dogs from the day they are captured and placed in a shelter to the 12th day.
While a handful will go on to find a forever home, more often than not, these dogs succumbed to either illnesses that are widespread in the shelter or to the deadline that man has placed upon them.

Mummy knew that the film wasn't going to be an easy watch (she is a crybaby whenever it comes to animal-related stuff), but wanted to catch it anyway.
So, she bought a copy and had it mailed over to us.
When it finally arrived, Mummy explained the storyline of the movie to us. She was a little undecided if she wanted us to watch it with her as there was a chance that we might be uncomfortable with the (barking/whining) sounds from the film.
After some thought, we felt that we were ready for that and requested to be there for the film.
Of course, we found the best seats in the house and mummy got the film rolling.
It was the longest 1.5 hours of my life.
No, the show wasn't boring (the pace was a little slow though), it just as expected, really difficult to finish.
Pecan ah ma was so upset that she would end up barking and screaming at the TV whenever she heard the dogs barking or whining defensively. We had to let her out of the room several times to calm herself down.
It wasn't easy for me either. But seeing Mummy bawling her eyes out made me determined to stick through it and support her through it.
To be honest, our hearts ached when we saw how terrified and helpless these dogs were.
These shelter dogs were robbed of their freedom and treated with so little dignity. Not only were they given a deadline, they were placed in an environment that did not even give them a good fighting chance to begin with.
It was just horrible.

The fate of many of the dogs brought tears to our eyes.
But the dog that broke Mummy's heart (and ours too) the most was a lovely mongrel named 十五分鐘 (Fifteen minutes).
He was a case of abandonment. When his owner surrendered him over to the dog catchers, the owner was informed about the possible fate of euthanasia. He hesitated for a mere 15 minutes before sticking to his decision of abandoning the dog.
I didn't realize that the lives of my kind is that worthless and that all it takes is 15 minutes to decide that all the joy and love we give to you isn't enough for us to keep our lives.
#howcanlikethat
Watching the film made me and Pecan ah ma a tad guilty for taking our lives for granted.
I am extremely lucky to be born in an awesome breeder's home (in NYC) and then welcomed (with open arms) into the Loo Lim family. On the other hand, Pecan's other family showered her with love for the first 9 years of her life before she came to us.
We really cannot ask for more as we're blessed with a roof over our heads and loving parents who think the world of us (okay, I exaggerate, just Mummy).
We just wished that these shelter dogs had an opportunity to have a family to love and call their own.
The message of the film was clear -
Please adopt and don't abandon.
Just don't abandon.
As dogs, we really ain't asking a lot from you. Besides providing us with shelter and food, all we asked is for you to hold our hands and walk us through the rest of our lives. And, we promise you, we will give you all the love we're capable of.
So please don't let go of our hands. ever.

Ah ma's obsession...

has grown!
Seeing how fond of squeaky toys Pecan ah ma is, Mummy just couldn't stop adding more to the collection.

And the newest member of ah ma's gang of BFFs is...
Of course ah ma loves it.
Not only is it new, the size is just right for her smelly mouth!
No thanks to Mummy for indulging in her love for squeaky toys, Pecan has developed a new pastime.
First, she leaves her squeaky friends everywhere around the house.
Then, she walks around looking for them, before stepping on them (she treats her friends horribly!) to hear them squeak.
She would repeat the above actions till she finds her flavor of the day.
After which, she would proceed to carry it for god-knows-how long.

No surprises who's her favorite today.
And of course, she has to bring it to bed with her.
LE SIGH~
#takeupspaceonly
I'm really wishing Mummy would stop indulging in ah ma's weird obsession and spend the money on treats to fill my little tummy.
Fingers crossed!

Ah ma's recovery

When Mummy first adopted Pecan, this crazy feisty ah ma's energy was higher than mine. She even did better than me on her health checkup and blood test. (I failed my blood test twice due to high protein levels, aka eat too much.) For a while, Mummy thought that she adopted a ten-month-old rascal and not a decade old granny. Seeing how healthy and hyper ah ma is, I was quite resigned that I will be stuck with her for a long long time. (NOoooooooo) The only problem was that she was not sterilized. After taking ah ma's age into consideration (plus, I'm neutered), Mummy decided to let it be and not let ah ma undergo the surgery for that.

Little did she know that this will come back to haunt her.
*Den den den den* (Movie dramatic entrance)

Basically, Mummy noticed that ah ma's vulva was exceptionally swollen. While she thought that ah ma was in heat when we first got her, it remained swollen even after six months. Sensing that something was not right, she brought ah ma back to our favorite vet - Dr Vanessa. Dr Vanessa suspected that ah ma's uterus might be infected and recommended that ah ma get spayed as soon as possible. During the consultation, I also asked Dr Vanessa if ah ma will be less grumpy after being spayed. Dr Vanessa laughed and said no.
WHY NO?!?!?!?!??!?!
#resigned
Anyway, Mummy decided to seek Dr Vanessa's opinion and let ah ma go ahead with the op.

To be honest, Mummy was dreading the day as she was worried that ah ma might not make it.
The good news: she did.
The not-so-good news:  she had pyometra. On top of that, she had a few tumors in her womb (the biggest was 5cm)!
That's bigger than my nose!!!!
Dr Vanessa has since sent the tumors for biopsy and it will be a week before we know if they are cancerous.
#prayforahma

More importantly, Mummy was just glad that ah ma is still alive!
But it was really obvious poor ah ma was in a lot of pain as she spent the whole night shaking. She was so uncomfortable that she did not even bother growling at the two other dogs that were in the clinic with her! That's a first!
And despite not having anything to eat for the last 24 hours, she refused all the food, including her favorite wet food that Mummy gave her.
Hehehe, no prizes for guessing who had to finish the leftovers.
*pats my round little tummy*
Seeing how much ah ma is suffering, being the great little bro I always am, I gave up the best sleeping spot in the house (aka our parents' bed) for her.
So Pecan got to cuddle up with Daddy and Mummy and that certainly perked her up a little bit.
Although she was still shivering a fair bit, she did cheer up a little.

Recovery Day 2
Ah ma is seriously a fighter.
Not only was she shaking a lot less, her appetite was pretty much back and she was back to gobbling down her food. That being said, her tail was pretty much down most of the day and she was walking like a slow coach on our walks.
Needless to say, I gave up my sleeping spot one more time.

Recovery Day 3
When Mummy woke up to this face, she knew that ah ma is back!!!
(Yap, I can confirm that as she growled at me when I attempted to steal her treat.)
Pecan's tail was also back to the endless wagging!
And we got back to our routine of sleeping on clean laundry!
Not forgetting our massage routine too!

Recovery Day 4
Yap, ah ma was as good as new!
Sigh~  my tragic life is also back.
She wasn't shaking at all and went back to hopping around, walking like the speed of a bullet train and of course, stealing my food. =/
Feeling bad that ah ma had to go through all these and to make ah ma happy, Mummy even bought her a little toy to celebrate her recovery.
Happy ah ma!
Ah ma is clearly amazing as in just four short days, she is back to her usual self! If not for the cone and stitches, I doubt anyone will know that she even went through an op!
On a good note, at least now her AVA registration fee is cheaper!

We're just waiting for ah ma's biopsy result and fingers crossed that she will be okay!
Meanwhile, I'm back to being tormented by her.
SIGH~
Oh, well, at least I got my spot in the bed BACK.
WAHAHHAHAHAHAHA

Pecan's little quirks....

We usually try to keep our blog posts light-hearted and cheery.
I mean, that's pretty much how our lives are. But occasionally, there will be certain dog-related encounters that pisses Mummy off (but again, a lot of things pisses that lady off.) and get her really upset. One such incident happened during our night walk today and we just felt the need to mention it here....

For those who have met me and Mummy at doggy events (Thanks for saying hi!!!), one of the most common questions I get is: "Where's Pecan ah ma?"
Don't let her cute (PUI~) little face deceive you.
Unlike me, Pecan ah ma is actually not dog-friendly, at all.
While she is the sweetest little thing to humans (even to annoying kids), she cannot handle the sight of another dog.
Things weren't easy from the start. Since bringing ah ma home with us, Mummy and Daddy had to deal with the endless little squabbles that happened between us which usually ended with me screaming like a girl. We fought at least once a day for a good whole month. Worse of all, our walks were constantly disrupted by Pecan screaming her lungs off at any other dogs that is in her vicinity.
(This is the real reason behind our lack of pet-friendly brunches as she just couldn't handle any other canines)
It also took our parents a while to understand her rather subtle triggers. In fact, my parents actually engaged the help of a professional trainer, Kristina from Puppy Colours to work with Pecan ah ma one-on-one.
We focused on identifying her triggers, catching her before her behavior escalate and getting her to focus on Mummy through positive reinforcements (e.g. treats).
Kristina was amazing and really patient with ah ma!
And after three training sessions and a lot of hard work, Pecan ah ma has officially graduated and does not need any more classes!
But that doesn't mean that she is fully sociable and can be placed in a room of dogs.
Instead, the work continues every single day through our daily walks!
Each walk we have is an opportunity to help ah ma learn. This is one reason why Daddy always gets dragged to go on strolls with us. Mummy will work with Pecan while I trot along with Daddy. While I am usually well-behaved on my own, I have the tendency to react when ah ma does too. Hence, Daddy has to ensure that I am not affected.
Meanwhile, mummy stays attentive towards the environment and will always make sure that Pecan doesn't over-react when she sees other dogs.
And trust me, while it was no easy task, we were accomplishing mountains.
Those who have known Pecan from the very first day have complimented us on her vast improvement.

Despite our hard work, every once in a while, we would meet someone who would ignorantly disrupt our walks by assuming that all dogs are as friendly as theirs. And tonight was such a night.

We were strolling around our neighborhood as usual when ah ma stopped to poo in a dark grass patch. Due to the lack of light, Mummy couldn't find the doodie she left behind. So she handed Pecan to Daddy and tried to find it. Just when Daddy was holding on to us, we saw a young boy (primary school) running full speed with his Poodle towards us. Being caught off-guard, and with a hand in a poop-bag (it was quite a funny sight though), Mummy had to pull Pecan back and step between Pecan and the other dog while shouting for the boy to not approach.
Meanwhile, Daddy had his hands full handling me.
Even though Ah ma exploded into her full bark and attempted to lunge at the dog, Mummy had managed to pull her away in time. Being the kpo me, I had to join in the barking too and started shouting at the Poodle! Our parents ended up having to calm us down while dragging us away. As we walked away, we even heard the boy telling other people that his dog doesn't bite, unlike us. (By now, Mummy was fuming.) To make matters worse, he lingered around and kept made 'barking noises' to irritate us.
Mummy was so annoyed that she actually told him off.
While Mummy was rather upset, it also got her wondering: why on earth is the kid walking the dog on his own and even so, why isn't he aware about how to approach other dogs??
Firstly, not all dogs are as friendly as yours, so maybe you shouldn't assume that. And even if you want to approach others, do it slowly. Running full speed over is just gonna make things worse!
Most importantly, when you see another dog with his owner, take a while to observe what the owner's reaction is. If he turns around and walks away, please don't chase. He's just giving his dog the space the dog needs (okay, maybe he's just unfriendly). Move on and your life isn't worse off for not greeting that one dog.
This incident was rather unnecessary, and how the boy reacted after that didn't help either. He might just be a kid, but still, he needs to know how to handle such situations to protect his own dog.

Anyway, we would just like to say that we are doing our best to make Pecan a better behaved ah ma. We just need a bit of help from everyone else.
For a start, if you see us in the streets walking and have a dog with you, please trot away and not approach us.
But if you do not have a dog with you, feel free to come over and let ah ma kiss you with her stinky mouth~
On the other hand, if it's me alone, please come and say hi! And if I like the furry you enough, I would roll over and let you sniff my wee-wee.
I do the same for humans too! But please give me a belly rub k?
Meanwhile, give us some time while we continue to work with Pecan ah ma to be more tolerant with other dogs.
While we do not dream of the day that ah ma can interact freely and happily in a dog run, we are aiming towards her not giving a damn about any other dogs that she encounter on our daily walks.
So wish us all the best and we will keep you updated on how the grumpy old lady is doing!
